What Actually Makes a Website Convert, Not Just Look Good

2026-10-045 min read

It is entirely possible for a website to look impressive and still fail at the one thing it is actually there to do, turn a visitor into an enquiry. Plenty of good looking sites quietly underperform for years because nobody ever asked what a visitor is supposed to do once they land on the page.

Speed matters more than most people think.

A website that takes several seconds to load on a phone loses a real share of its visitors before they see anything at all. Large, uncompressed images and unnecessary scripts are the most common culprits, and they are also usually the easiest thing to fix once somebody actually looks for them.

The enquiry should never be more than a click or two away.

A visitor who is interested should never have to hunt for a way to get in touch. A clear, visible way to enquire, placed near the top of the page and repeated as someone scrolls, consistently outperforms a single contact form buried at the very bottom.

The form itself matters too. A long form asking for every detail up front puts people off before they have even started. A shorter first step, with the option to add more information afterwards, tends to produce noticeably more completed enquiries.

Real photography beats generic stock images.

A visitor can usually tell the difference between a business's actual premises, products or team and a stock photograph that could belong to anyone. Real photography builds trust in a way a generic image never quite manages, which is a large part of why we treat content creation as part of a proper website project rather than an afterthought.

Mobile first, not mobile as an afterthought.

Most visitors to most websites are now on a phone, not a desktop computer. A site that was designed on a large screen and then simply squeezed to fit a smaller one usually shows it, with text too small to read comfortably or buttons too close together to tap accurately. Building for mobile first and working up to desktop produces a noticeably better result for the majority of visitors.

If your current website looks fine but is not producing enquiries, that gap between the two is usually fixable, and it is worth a proper look before assuming the website itself is the problem.
